Your Voice Matters: Shaping the Future of Vocational Training
As you may already be aware, the government is currently seeking feedback on proposals to redesign New Zealand’s vocational education and training system. The goal is to ensure that our people, industries, and communities can thrive in the future. Your input is crucial to shaping a system that works for everyone in our industry.
One thing we’ve learned is that our industry’s significant contribution to GDP and employment is not widely recognised outside our sector. This presents us with a unique opportunity to reshape the industry going forward, ensuring it receives the recognition and support it deserves.
We strongly urge you to seize this opportunity and make a submission by Thursday 12 September 2024
Key Points to Consider in Your Submission:
Market Size:
- We have estimated that the Machined Components sector contributes approximately $2.8-3.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP.
We estimate that machined components represent $1.25-1.5 billion in annual sales.
Many of these components are integral to larger products, adding 100-200% in value beyond their direct contribution.
Employment:
- We have estimated that New Zealand currently has around 6,000-8,000 trained machinists working in approximately 800-1,000 machine shops across the country.
- The machining industry supports around 30,000 jobs at the first tier, with machinists making up about 20% of their workplace roles.
- We will need 200-300 new machinists each year. Considering the number of retirements expected over the next decade, this demand could be even higher.
